Ghostly 15: Mixtape Curated by Michael Cina

Final 15 - A Ghostly 15 Playlist Curated by Michael Cina
"Anyone that knows me, knows that my main passion is music. I spend all day listening to music at work and my vinyl collection of 16k pieces greets me when I get home. I knew about Ghostly International before they contacted me in the early 2000’s and we would write off and on. They used to send me big packages of white labeled vinyl, it was decadent.
Late 2007 I got a call from Ghostly asking if I was up for designing a new single for Dabrye. It was a dream come true and I feel like I found a friend who really understood me. I have had the distinct privilege to design over 100 covers for Ghostly, and that is only the half of it.
When they asked me to do a compilation, I was all about it. I wanted to do three or more compilations because I wanted to segment it up into different sections (Ghostly, SMM and Spectral). It is impossible to reduce the entire label to 15 tracks. Ghostly is dynamic, they don’t fit one sound, genre or idea.
So I approached it as a mixtape of sorts. I tried to find a common thread that spoke to me and create a mood around that idea. Some of my favorite tracks are not on here. JDSY 'Horizon Line' makes my head spin. Choir of Young Believers 'Paralyse' takes me to another place. There are so many more.
What you are hearing some songs that have spoken to me over the years in a distinct way. I don’t feel like they are obvious choices but they all are nothing short of amazing. I hope this compilation helps you see a different side of one of the best labels to ever do it." - Michael Cina

SBTRKT: Temporary View ft. Sampha

Europa Europa and The Knife -- För alla namn vi inte får använda

"För alla namn vi inte får använda" a single from Europa Europa -- an antinational cabaret about migration politics by the art group Ful with music by The Knife. Why do we build walls against heroes? With the cabaret Europa Europa and the song and music video "För alla namn vi inte får använda" by Europa Europa and The Knife we want to praise all those hundreds of thousands of people who defy the cameras, the deadly waters, the barbed wire, the violence and the compact political resistance, and make it across the external and internal borders of Europe every year. Europa Europa premieres on the 1st of July in Almedalen, Gotland, during the political week of the election year. Performances will be given on outdoor stages in various cities throughout Sweden up until the election in september, free of charge for all visitors. The cabaret Europa Europa is part of a movement that exists both within activism and academia, where individuals are trying to expose the human rights violations that are committed by Sweden and the EU every day. The song "För alla namn vi inte får använda" is a part of the cabaret and the lyrics will be handed out to the audience to sing along. In the music video you see the steps to the "political Macarena" dance choreographed by the dance- and choreographygroup Dom Dugliga. Learn the steps and dance along!"

Infographics: Artist Map

Paul Lamere of Music Machinery made this interesting map of favorite musical acts by state. This map is not a map of the most played artist in each state, one requirement was that only one artist could be assigned to each state.
Paul explains "For this study, I sampled the listening preferences of about a quarter million listeners that have a zip code associated with their account. update: Listener data is drawn from a variety of music streaming services that are powered by The Echo Nest. I aggregated these listeners into regions (state, regional and all-US). To compare regions I look at the top-N most popular artists based upon listener plays in each region and look for artists that have a substantial change in rank between the two regions. These artists are the artists that define the taste for the region."

What Difference Does It Make

"What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music Featuring Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder, Erykah Badu and more than 70 other artists, What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music marks the 15th anniversary of the Red Bull Music Academy -- Red Bull's longest running cultural program -- and captures the energy of the 2013 edition in New York. It gets to the heart of what it takes to be a musician and, in the process, deals with some of the basic questions of life itself."
